Service
FIVB agreed changes to start in 2025. Prior to this there was a prerequisite for the serving side to be in serving-rotation. So now, the attacking team can be in any position they choose to be.
In the past you often had 3 players together at the front of the court, often blocking the view of the service (aka a 'screen').
There are a few caveats to the new rules - on serve:
  • You are now no longer allowed to crowd together at the front of the court.
  • People on the front court cannot raise their hands above their heads. They can put them on the back of their heads to protect it from wayward serves from their servers.
  • People on the back court cannot raise their arms at all.
  • As the rule does not apply for the receiving side, you do have to remember where you should have been for when you lose service and have to receive.
  • The receiving side still have to be in rotation until the server tosses the ball.
